Kinder Kloset celebrates 25 Years

Kinder Kloset first opened its doors on Sheyenne Street in West Fargo in June, 1985, with three employees. Founder Mona Thorstad had a vision of a store that bought and sold pre-owned children's clothing, toys, and equipment, giving a second life to outgrown or unwanted items that otherwise would be discarded, making Kinder Kloset the first store of its kind in the Fargo-Moorhead region.

Although totally supported now, when the store first opened, there was somewhat of a stigma attached to buying used clothing. Undaunted, Thorstad and her staff stuck with the concept, providing the foundation for the store's current success.

Kinder Kloset remained at its original location for several years, before relocating to Fargo on 9th Ave. S., near the Century 10 Theater. Kinder Kloset moved to its current location at 745 45th St S in Fargo in 2003.

Mona, and husband Mike Thorstad, sold the business to Sharon and Gary Mapes, who owned and operated the store until 2008, when it was purchased by Mona's cousin Lenae and her husband Tony Ambrose. Sadly, shortly after selling the business, Sharon passed away.

Kinder Kloset continues to build on the foundation laid by the Thorstad family and the Mapes family. The business counts among its seven current employees Susan Durbin, who was a member of the original team that opened the original store on Sheyenne Street. She particularly enjoys seeing customers who frequented the store when their children were young returning to shop for their grandchildren. Also on staff is Jayne Mapes, Sharon's daughter-in-law, who has been with the store for over four years.

Today, Kinder Kloset has many happy customers from all over the region - called one of the best poorly-kept secrets in town. Although there have been several changes to the store and its operations in recent years (computerized inventory system, "Grandparents Day" every Tuesday, weekly clothes buying day on Wednesdays), a conscious effort is made to remember and recognize the origins of its success.

Lenae and Tony are proud to carry forward the traditions, values, and ideals established by Mona and fostered by Sharon: putting customers first, offering quality merchandise at a fair price, having a family-friendly shopping environment, and making a positive contribution to the community in which they live, work, and play.

Kinder Kloset buys and sells quality pre-owned children's clothing, toys, equipment, and accessories. Clothes can be brought in for sale every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., no appointment necessary. Quality is more important than brand - clothes do not need to be a certain brand name, but must be free of rips or stains. Clothes are purchased on a seasonal basis - February through June the store buys summer, and July through January winter. Toys and equipment can be brought in at any time during regular business hours.

Kinder Kloset makes a purchasing offer based on what they believe they can sell. If the customer accepts the store's offer, they are paid cash, in full, on the spot.

Store hours are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday 12 to 5 p.m. The store is located behind JT Cigarro's at the corner of 45th St. S. and 7th Ave. S. in Fargo.
