14U intermediate tennis team qualifies for National Championship
A tennis team comprised of kids from all over the Fargo-Moorhead area will get a chance to win a national title this fall.
The Metro Area Tennis Players 14 and Under Intermediate team recently won the United States Tennis Association Section Championships in Minneapolis, and will advance to the National Championships Oct. 22-24, in Arizona.
"This is a big-time deal," said Chad Anderson, West Fargo varsity tennis coach and USTA coordinator for the F-M area.
The 14U intermediate team was one of several in the F-M area, Anderson said. Roughly 60 boys and girls made up four 14U advanced teams, two 14U intermediate and a 12U advanced team.
The league "lets the girls and boys play as a team," Anderson said.
"I think it's great. We have kids from just about every F-M secondary school," 14U coach Vic Youngs said.
Many of the players knew each other before joining the team, Youngs said. Of them, Brady Ballweber and Kayley Stock are from West Fargo.
Teams break down to singles and doubles by gender with one mixed doubles team, Anderson said. Scoring during league play also is different.
"They go by games won," he said. "Every game counts, which makes it interesting."
Before heading to Minneapolis, the 14U intermediate team won the Area Championships in Jamestown on July 14.
"They sure did well," Youngs said of his team's win in Minneapolis. "It was very exciting. ... There was a lot of cheering at the end."
Youngs said the chemistry on his team is strong, and players easily interchange to form solid doubles partners.
"They're good, first and foremost, because they like to play," Youngs said. "We're playing happily and proudly in our division and doing really well."
