4th annual "Fitten' Mittens" donates to local schools
Healing Touch Chiropractic, West Fargo, partnered with the West Fargo School District to address a critical need in our local schools, which is taken for granted by most. Each winter, hundreds of our children face the cold weather without adequate winter attire.
"As the mother of a 3rd grader, I hear of my daughter's classmates who are not able to participate at recess because they don't have enough winter wear," said Dr. Tiffany Johnson, Healing Touch Chiropractic. "I just couldn't accept that fact, so my staff and I decided we had to do everything we could to make sure something as basic as a pair of mittens or gloves was available for every child who needed them."
But it's not just about kids staying warm that makes this an issue for Johnson and her staff. Inactivity and poor eating habits contribute to obesity in children, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over the past three decades the childhood obesity rate has more than doubled for preschool children aged 2-5 years and adolescents aged 12-19 years, and it has more than tripled for children aged 6-11 years.
National guidelines recommend 150 minutes of physical activity each week for elementary children and 225 minutes for older children. Very few children actually get the recommended amount of physical activity each day. Winter weather makes meeting that recommendation even more difficult. "It is imperative that these children get enough exercise and social interaction and if they are not dressed properly, or the school does not have enough extra clothing, they are to remain indoors for their safety," said Johnson.
Donations for "Fittin' Mittens" were distributed on Monday, November 23, to local children through area elementary schools. "Thank you so much for the generosity of Healing Touch Chiropractic and our community members who contributed to this cause. Many children who may have gone without this year are going to be staying dry and warm," said a teacher from a local elementary school.
"We are fortunate to live in such a caring community where the residents understand the importance of helping those in need. My staff and I appreciate all the support we received from our patients and residents of the communities. It feels great to be involved with helping children stay warm this winter," added Johnson.
