American Legion oratorical contest at Harwood Elementary

The 1st District American Legion Oratorical Contest will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Harwood Elementary School in Harwood. The contest is open to all secondary school students in grades 9-12. Participants deliver an 8-10 minute prepared oration on the Constitution of the United States of America and a 3-5 minute oration on a pre-assigned amendment.

The 1st District includes Cass, Barnes, Griggs, Steele and Traill Counties. Students interested in competing at the 1st District Contest need to register with Oratorical Contest Chair Dave Rice by Dec. 7.

The top three district winners receive cash scholarships of $300/$200/$100 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers respectively. The 1st place contestant advances to the Division Contest in Carrington, Dec. 29 where the top two finishers are selected to participate in the state finals in Minot, Feb. 2, 2013. Cash scholarships are awarded at each level. Students advancing all the way to the National Contest can receive several thousands of dollars in scholarships.
