Basketball begins with two wins, two losses

Both the Packers boys' and girls' basketball team ended their first week of the season with a .500 record, as both teams lost to Fargo Shanley on Thursday before beating Devils Lake on Saturday.

The state runner-up Packer girls fell to the Deacons 56-47, and beat the Firebirds 66-52.

The boys lost to Shanley 75-56, then beat Devils Lake 65-56.

In both games, the girls were led by senior guard Christine Baltezore, who had 10 points in the first game and 14 in the second. Senior Lexi Lennon had 13 points in the second game, junior Shelby Gustafson had 12 and junior Amanda Levin had 11.

In the first game, junior Cass Thorson pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

The boys were led by senior Derek Hogenson in the first game with 11 points, and by junior Travis Schock's 27 points in the second game. Senior Justin Heisler also chipped in 14 points of his own in the second game.

The girls' team will travel to Grand Forks Central to take on the Knights tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.

The boys will then head to Grand Forks to take on the Knights on Friday night, also at 7:30 p.m.
