Bitzer wins home run derby
The strong wind blowing in from left field at Story Field made it a tough day to go deep, but West Fargo's slugger Chance Bitzer was able to knock one out to take the Home Run Derby, earning a beautiful new bat from Athlete's Corner and a gift certificate from Coldstone Creamery.
The event was held in conjunction with the Babe Ruth World Series in Longview, Wash., with the home run derby featuring one player from each team. The competition granted each participant 10 outs, and any swing that did not produce a home run counted as an out.
Facing Lower Columbia College pitching coach Rob Hippi, and the cavernouse dimensions of Story Field, the derby field managed only one home run - Bitzer's line shot down the left field line that sneaked over the wall and under the Dick Hannah Toyota banner mounted above it.
