Boys hockey drops first two games of season
After a disappointing 8-15-0 season last year, the West Fargo boys started the season by facing two of last year’s top teams in the west, falling to Bismarck High 2-1 on Friday before losing to Bismarck Century 4-2 on Saturday.
The Packers jumped to an early lead against the Demons, as senior forward Austen Larsen scored the first West Fargo goal of the season less than three minutes into the game. However, that would be the team’s only goal of the game, while Bismarck scored to unanswered goals in the third period to seal the victory.
Highlighting the Packers on Friday was senior goalie Bailey Vareburg, who stopped 36 of the 38 shots he faced against the Demons.
Forwards Kody Coles and Nathan Cookman, recorded assists on Larsen’s goal.
Saturday’s game saw the Patriots jump out to a quick 2-0 lead. Packer forward Jake Wasem scored on the power play early in the second, but St. Mary answered five minutes later to build a 3-1 lead.
Junior forward Jake Hoy scored the team’s second goal 16 minutes into the second, but the Patriots’ lone goal in the third was the nail in the coffin for the Packers.
Sophomore defenseman Grant Ellenson had two assists for the Packers.
The Packers’ first conference game takes place on Saturday when they host Fargo North at 7:30 p.m.
