Breitling is a retired attorney, having served with the Ohnstad Twichell Law Firm in West Fargo since March of 1967. He earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1965 and served as a staff attorney with the Legislative Research Counsel, the legal office for the North Dakota Legislature before joining Ohnstad Twichell.

Licensed to practice in both North Dakota and Minnesota, during his more than 40 years as a practicing attorney, Breitling represented the Water Resource Districts in four southeastern North Dakota counties and the 14 county Red River Joint Water Resource Board.

During his tenure, he was a member of the Cass County Bar Association, State Bar Association of North Dakota, and the American Bar Association; past president of the Cass County Bar Association and past member of the Board of Directors of the North Dakota State Bar Association; and a member of the North Dakota and Minnesota Trial Lawyers Association and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America.

Breitling said his decision to run for city commission was prompted by the fact that he now has the necessary time that it takes to commit to such a position. "I have always had an interest in government," he stated. "Now that I have the time to devote to this interest I have decided to be involved in the elective process."

Breitling said there are a number of city projects to be addressed and he would like to be a part of that decision-making process. "We need to address the completion of the Main Avenue project, be involved in the Red River Diversion decisions, be concerned about the development of County Road 17, and we need to be involved in a long-term solution to the water supply for the city."

Breitling also intends to continue to remain active in a variety of community and civic endeavors that in the past have included: serving as president of the Maple River Golf Course for six years; being active in the West Fargo Hockey Association, as well as other civic groups; and providing volunteer legal service to the West Fargo Fire Department, receiving their Lifetime Membership. The Breitlings are members of Blessed Sacrament Church, where Duane served as the building committee chairperson for an educational addition.

He and his wife, Mary Jane, have four adult children who received their educations in West Fargo schools, where they were active in sports, music and theater. Eric lives in West Fargo; Christopher, his wife Jackie Flaten and daughter Madeleine, live in Fremont, Calif; Kevin, lives near Santa Cruz, Calif.; and Elizabeth in Lodi, Calif.
