This event will mark the eighth Cinco de Mayo celebration sponsored by the Sister Parish of Faith Lutheran. The gathering honors Mexican culture and heritage through food and music. Though this local celebration is a week earlier than the actual date of May 5, it is a special Mexican holiday recognizing the defeat of the French army at the Battle of Puebla on that date in 1862.

Raices de Mexico dancers will perform starting at 6:30 p.m. There will be a full Mexican piñata game for the children. Fair trade coffee, chocolate and other crafts will be available for purchase. The silent auction items include a lefse griddle, art, and numerous other items. A cake walk will also be held during the evening,

The Cinco de Mayo celebration is a fundraiser for the Faith Sister Parish, which is part of the national organization of Sister Parish, Inc., co-founded in 1988 by Vicki Schmidt of West Fargo. Faith Lutheran has a long term relationship with Iglesia San Marco Evangelista in Tierra Nueva Uno, Guatemala. The mission of Sister Parish is to further the cause of peace and justice through building relationships of mutual respect and dignity between communities of Faith in the United States and Central America. The funds raised at the dinner will assist members of the Guatemalan community to visit the West Fargo area over Thanksgiving.

The cultural celebration is planned in conjunction with the meeting of the Board of Directors of Sister Parish, Inc, which will meet at Faith Lutheran over the weekend. The board consists of members from sister parishes around the United States, and will include staff from Guatemala. Board and staff members will give a brief presentation at all services of worship at both worship sites on Saturday, 5 p.m., at Faith, and Sunday at 8:30 and 11 a.m., at the Faith Lutheran site; and 10 a.m. at Journey worship at the Scheels Arena.
