The city purchased the land a year ago and is now leasing it back to the West Fargo Fire Department for $1 so fire department officials can proceed with their funding options.

West Fargo Fire Chief Roy Schatschneider estimates the cost of the new facility at about $1.75 million. He said the plan is to break ground as soon as possible this spring, hopefully in mid-May, with the end of the year targeted as a completion date, and occupancy early 2011.

The department presently operates out of their main fire station at 106 1st St., their longtime location which will continue to serve as the base headquarters.

In other action, the commission:

-following a public hearing, approved first reading for the rezoning of Shadow Wood 1st and 2nd additions from special single family dwellings to one and two family dwellings to allow for different single family housing styles for the 9.5 acre parcel located west of 9th Street East and north of 36th Avenue East. The area was annexed into the city in 2005 with the first subdivision approved in 2007 and Shadow Wood 2nd Addition approved in September of 2008. The developer had proposed a new zoning district in order to accentuate the home and not the garage, a request approved by the city for both Shadow Wood 1st and 2nd.The developer is now requesting to rezone the current development to R-1 to allow for greater flexibility in building design. The proposed development is consistent with city plans and the concerns of the adjoining property owners as they pertained to development plans, have been addressed. It was agreed that three properties would be excluded from the zoning request, Lots 20 and 21, Block 2 of Shadow Wood 2nd Addition, and Lot 1, Block 3 of Shadow Wood 2nd Addition, which will be included in a follow-up rezoning request to Planned Unit Development.

-approved second and final reading of traffic ordinance No. 856 relating to traffic ordinances, which involved changing some of the wording to better reflect current situations. The changes involved the penalties for driving without liability insurance, speed limitations in school zones, and setting the minimum fee for violation in construction zones at $80;

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the West Fargo City Commission will take place at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Feb.15, in the commission chamber at West Fargo City Hall, 800 4th Ave. E. all meetings are open to the public.
