Cleanup Week back on track
The on-again, off-again West Fargo Cleanup Week is back on again and will take place all next week -- Monday, May 6 through Friday, May 10 -- as originally planned.
The threat of flooding last week caused metro city leaders to delay the event until fall, but when the threat didn't materialize and was downgraded, the decision was made Monday to return to the regular schedule.
On that note, West Fargo, Fargo and Moorhead residents will be able to start planning for all those extras they want to dispose of.
West Fargo crews encourage residents to place their items on the curb before 6 a.m. on their regular garbage collection days to make the process as efficient as possible. Larger items will also be taken, with several trucks out and about picking up different types of junk and debris including tires, appliances, larger pieces of furniture, etc. The only stipulation is that the garbage is residential and not commercially related.
Sanitation Manager Dennis Correll said that crews have the process pretty much down pat. "It will be handled pretty much the same as it always has been in the past. We are going to have a lot of trucks running around like always, so if something is missed, it will more than likely be picked up by a different truck."
Correll said that residents can help out by following a few simple guidelines that will make it much easier for collection crews: Separating items into distinct groupings - tires, appliances, furniture, lumber, brush, household garbage, etc.; placing garbage in disposable containers, except for oversized items; and removing doors on refrigerators and freezers, with all foodstuffs removed. There is no limit being placed on the number of appliances that can be disposed of.
Residents who want to haul away larger items themselves, can do so all week long, free of charge, by taking refuse to the city's transfer station at 1620 W. Main Ave. All that is required is proof of identification, such as a driver's license, confirming West Fargo residency.
The transfer station is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday with crews on hand to assist. During the year, regular hours at the transfer station are 1 to 4 p.m., on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
All types of hazardous household waste will also be accepted during cleanup week, including paint and oil, but Correll emphasizes that he really wants people to dispose of hazardous items themselves so his crews "don't have to deal with them." Items can be taken to the Fargo Hazardous Waste Facility located by the Fargo landfill. This is a service available all year long at no charge to residents due to the fact that West Fargo garbage is taken to the Fargo landfill.
