Community spirit alive and thriving
If you are looking for something fun and exciting to take in this weekend, then head out on the highway 'north' to the neighboring community of Harwood, where residents will be hosting their community days celebration.
The event has been observed every other year for well over two decades, growing in popularity thanks to the word-of-mouth exposure from visitors who say it is one of the best community parties around.
Because of the enormity in planning, organizers say the every two years rotation has been working well, allowing them ample time to mold the event into being the best it can possibly be - a fine-tuned day that is a mixed bag of activities sure to appeal to everyone.
Residential and business participation are both core to the event's success. This year, Harwood State Bank officials are finding the timing opportune and utilizing the occasion to celebrate and share their rich 90 year history in the community by promoting a special walk and activities capped off by a complimentary lunch for everybody, as well as tours of their relatively new facility that saw them moving last year from their downtown anchor position to all new headquarters off the Interstate by the post office.
Organizers of the community day observance are extending an open invitation to everyone in the entire metro area looking for a day of wholesome, family-oriented fun, food and excitement, to join them in the festivities which will once again be highlighted by the grand parade at 4 p.m. typically boasting 75 to 100 units, and scores of spectators lining the respective roadways.
Another huge element that goes into making this event so successful are the countless hours devoted by the legion of volunteers who ask for nothing in return but the pleasure of your company as they spotlight their community on its special day.
Through the years, the popularity of the event has spread thanks to family and friends of residents, who have attended in the past and are more than willing and anxious to spread the good word, encouraging others to take in the action.
Consequently, a few visitors have now turned into hundreds, with more and more participating each year the event is held.
This is a great situation to lay claim to, and excellent exposure for a growing little suburban city that knows what it takes to throw an excellent party that has all your friends and neighbors showing up with only one thing in mind - enjoying a remarkably good time.
So this Saturday, if you are undecided on how to spend your day take advantage of the open-ended invitation, and make Harwood the place to be.
