Cyril C. "Cy" Howard, Jr., 70, of Naytahwaush, Minn., died Thursday, December 27, 2007, at the VA Hospital in St. Cloud.
Cyril was born to Cyril and Sadie (Peake) Howard on Aug. 4, 1937, on the White Earth Reservation. He attended the Indian boarding schools at Pipestone, Wahpeton and graduated from high school from Flandreau Indian School. In the fall of 1956, he entered Haskell Institute for further studies. In 1957 he enlisted in the Air Force, and received an honorable discharge in 1960. He attended Bemidji State University in Bemidji and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where he received his bachelor's degree in social work, and while at the U of M, he became a certified instrument pilot with Pilots Unlimited.
Cy worked at the MCT in Cass Lake, Minn.; the U.S. Post Office in Dallas, Texas; the Upper Midwest American Indian Center in Minneapolis; the State of Minnesota Department of Corrections; Minneapolis Public Schools; and he retired from the Post Office in Minneapolis.
Cy is survived by three sisters, Gertrude (Curtis) Buckanaga of Minneapolis, Theresa Howard-Yahr of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Anita J. Howard of Minneapolis; and one brother, Robert F. (Imogene) Howard of White Earth. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Donna Howard-Jerome, and one brother, John Theodore Howard.
A wake was held Thursday, Jan. 3, at the Upper Midwest Indian Center in Minneapolis, with burial on Friday, Jan. 4, at the Fort Snelling Cemetery in St. Paul. The pallbearers were Ronald Buckanaga, Neil Buckanaga, Sr., Neil Buckanaga, Jr., Joshua Howard, John Howard, Jr., and William Lee. The honorary pallbearers were Curtis Buckanaga and Manuel Gurneau as well as his nieces, nephews and many friends.
