Dan Gust, Sr., 92, formerly of Durbin, N.D., died Monday, October 12, 2009 at Arthur Good Samaritan Center, Arthur, N.D.
Dan was born January 13, 1917 in rural Durbin to Carl R. Gust and Elizabeth (Zimmermann) Gust.
Dan graduated from high school in Casselton, N.D. and attended college at NDSU. He served in the United States Army and was a Major upon his discharge in 1946.
Dan married Mary Matthew on April 9, 1944 in North Carolina. They returned to North Dakota and farmed on the home farm. He worked for the USDA-ASCS for 31 years. Dan was a lifetime member of the Canaan Moravian Church, Davenport, N.D. and was proud of his service on the Western District Board.
Dan and Mary moved to the Co-operative Living Center in West Fargo in 2006. They recently moved to the Good Samaritan Home in Arthur, N.D. where Dan was residing prior to his death.
Dan is survived by his wife, Mary, Arthur, his children, James Gust, Chippewa Falls, Wis. Gloria (Marvin) Smith, Davenport, N.D., Dan Jr. (Janel) Gust, Mapleton, N.D., Sarah Gust, Dilworth, Minn. 16 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and sister-in-law Dorothy Gust.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Elizabeth Gust, siblings, Arthur, Elmer, Rudolph, Clemence, and Laura Gust, grandchildren, Justin Gust, Amanda Nissen, and Lyle Cockerill.
The memorial service for Dan was held October 15, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Canaan Moravian Church, rural Davenport. Visitation and prayer services were held at Fredrikson Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, October 14. Interment was at Canaan Moravian Cemetery.
