Day 1: Thumbprint Cookies

Thumbprint Cookies

Cream: 1/4 cup soft shortening

1/4 cup butter

1/4 cup brown sugar (packed)

Beat in: 1 egg yolk

Add: 1/2 tsp vanilla

1 cup flour

1/4 tsp. salt

Roll 1 tsp. dough into balls. Dip in 1 slightly beaten egg white. Roll in 3/4 cup finely chopped nuts. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheet; press thumb gently into centers. Bake 10-12 min. Cool. Fill holes with colored frosting. Makes about 3 doz. cookies. Bake in 350 degree oven.


Ingredients: 1/8 cup butter

1 cup powdered sugar

1 egg yolk (may be omitted)

1/2 tsp. vanilla

1 Tblsp. cream

Thoroughly cream butter and sugar. Stir in unbeaten egg yolk and vanilla. Add cream as frosting becomes thick. Add food coloring if desired.
