F-M Sheltering Churches project moves forward
The F-M Sheltering Churches Project - in its third year serving the metro area – has opened its doors at member churches for overnight sheltering on a weekly schedule through the middle of April 2014. During this time, the churches are hosting about 30 “neighbors” nightly for 21 weeks.
During the last two years, more than 900 volunteers have been trained to assist “neighbors” in this sheltering opportunity. Past volunteers are encouraged to contact sheltering leaders in the churches they were involved with so they can volunteer again this year.
Additional new volunteers are also needed. Those wishing to do so need to attend a 2-hour training session that will be held twice monthly in January, February and March, at First United Methodist Church, 906 1 Ave. S., Fargo. Twelve volunteers are needed each night to facilitate/host a site; each would work for 4 hours.
It takes 84 volunteers to staff a site for a week of sheltering; and costs about $30,000 a year to make all of this possible. The linen services bill is $14,000; and the transportation cost is over $10,000.
For the cost of a specialty coffee ($5.50), you could provide shelter for one guest for one night. A matching opportunity exists through January 20, 2014. Every dollar donated, will be matched 2-1 up to $3,000 and 1 for 1 after that up to $5,000.
Checks and donations can be made out and sent to Central Cities Ministries, PO Box 1912, Fargo, 58107. On the memo line of the check, write: FM Sheltering Churches. Electronic donations can be made atwww.wepay.com/donations/overflow-shelter-project.
