Faith Lutheran holds Cinco de Mayo celebration
Cinco de Mayo, a lively Mexican festival, will be celebrated Saturday, May 4, at Faith Lutheran Church, 127 2nd Ave. E., West Fargo, beginning with a silent auction at 5:30 p.m. and a Mexican dinner served at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for ages 6-12. Children up through age five are free.
This event will mark the tenth Cinco de Mayo celebration sponsored by the Sister Parish committee of Faith Lutheran/Journey in Faith. The date itself recognizes the defeat of the French army at the Battle of Puebla on that date in 1862. Faith/Journey annually holds a fund raising event on the day as a way to support various projects and programs with a Sister Parish relationship in Guatemala. Highlights of the evening will include a Mexican piñata filled with candy for children, silent auction, a cake walk, music, and meringue dancing.
The Faith/Journey in Faith Sister Parish, which is part of the national organization of Sister Parish, Inc., was co-founded in 1988 by Vicki Schmidt of West Fargo. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the organization. Faith/Journey in Faith Lutheran has a long term relationship with Iglesia San Marco Evangelista in Tierra Nueva Uno, Guatemala. The mission of Sister Parish is to further the cause of peace and justice through building relationships of mutual respect and dignity between communities of faith in the United States and Central America. Currently Faith/Journey and Iglesia San Marco Evangelista are working together to create a safe and supervised multi-sports area for youth who have no place to play other than on crime ridden streets, and funds raised from Cinco de Mayo will help to make this dream real.
