This week is the last opportunity for anyone thinking about running for any of the open City positions or School Board seats in the June 8 Primary Election to get those petitions circulated and returned to respective offices.
The filing deadline for city positions is Friday, April 9, at 4 p.m.
School Board candidates must file an Affidavit of Candidacy and a Statement of Interests with the business manager of the school district, also by 4 p.m., Friday, April 9.
In West Fargo, besides the four-year mayor position of Rich Mattern in the June 8 Primary Election, several other four-year spots are also open - the terms of City Commissioners Lou Bennett and Bryan Schulz; the Park Board seats of Denise Johnson, Sharon Odegaard, and Ken Zetocha; the municipal judge position presently held by Susan Bailey; and the four school board positions of Angela Korsmo, Duane Hanson, Thomas Gentzkow, and Karen Nitskorski.
In Harwood, two city council and four park board positions are open, all four year terms; and in Horace, two city council and two park board seats, also four-year positions.
Those interested in becoming a candidate must be a qualified voter of their city and a resident for at least nine months preceding the election. The petition must contain the signatures of qualified electors, equal to but not less than 10 percent of the qualified voters who voted for that office in the last city election. However, not more than 300 signatures are required. In West Fargo, a total of 137 signatures are needed on the petitions for the June 8 election.
Just a reminder that those signing the petitions also need to be a resident of their respective communities and over 18 years of age, in order for their names to be valid on the petition.
Both the petition and statement of interest forms for city positions are available at West Fargo City Hall, 400 8th St. E.; Harwood, 108 Main St.; and Horace, 600 Nelson Dr.; or by linking onto www.nd.gov/sos/electvote/elections/forms.html.
The filing forms for school board candidates are available at the school district offices, 207 W. Main Ave., or online at the school district Web site at www.west-fargo.k12.nd.us.
Once the candidates are finalized, we'll provide a complete rundown of those vying for each position.
