One person was home at 519 9th Ave W. and was able to get out of the home and report the fire.

The West Fargo Fire Department responded to the call about 2:19 p.m. and contained the fire to a lower-level family room, said Chief Roy Schatschneider.

Inside the home, the family had two dogs, cats, rabbits and six ferrets. Schatschneider said the ferrets died in the fire. Schatschneider said the two dogs were unharmed, but was unsure if the other animals had escaped.

Schatschneider said the fire is believed to have started in the family room, but a cause has not yet been determined. He and representatives from the state fire marshal's office and an insurance investigator will return to the scene for further investigation.

"There was no immediate cause for it," Schatschneider said.

The American Red Cross, Minn-Kota Chapter Disaster Action Team was dispatched to the house to assist the family who Schatschneider said would not be able to return to the home tonight.

"The fire didn't go beyond that one room but there was pretty heavy smoke damage throughout the house," Schatschneider said. "It will take a major cleaning before they can move back in."
