Mandatory equipment must be purchased for fire trucks to meet the National Fire Protection Association standards. A single piece of equipment is very costly, and without the additional necessary gear, a West Fargo Fire Department truck would be put out of service. Thanks to employees at the West Fargo Monsanto site who nominated the West Fargo Fire Department for a $17,500 grant, the organization is able to purchase equipment for a fire truck to make the apparatus compliant and ready to function in all types of emergency situations.

The West Fargo Fire Department is a professionally run nonprofit organization that not only responds to emergencies, but also conducts fire and evacuation trainings with children.

West Fargo Fire Department will utilize the grant to purchase a hose, axes, valves, nozzles and other much needed tools. This equipment will enable the truck to be compliant with safety standards, allowing firefighters the ability to act efficiently and safely in emergency situations.

Vic Nordstrom, Monsanto site lead, was also excited to play a part in the donation. The West Fargo Monsanto site recently expanded its facility and the department helped to identify fire protection needs throughout the construction process.

"The West Fargo Fire Department is deserving of this grant because they are very active in our community," Nordstrom said. "They do an excellent job of training children at the schools, as well as performing inspections at businesses to help keep the workplace safe. We as a community are fortunate to have such a dedicated group of volunteers."

The Monsanto Fund, the philanthropic arm of the Monsanto Company, presented the $17,500 grant to the West Fargo Fire Department on Nov. 20.

"We are excited to help support the West Fargo Volunteer Fire Department," Nordstrom said. "West Fargo is a growing city and our donation will help the fire department keep up with the community's needs."

This year, the Monsanto Fund awarded 100 site grants to nonprofit organizations in 26 states. The Monsanto Fund continues to provide support to organizations such as West Fargo Fire Department, to help strengthen communities where farmers and Monsanto employees live and work.
