Flowers named N.D. Superintendent of the Year
David Flowers, Superintendent of Schools for West Fargo Public School District, has been named the North Dakota Superintendent of the Year by the North Dakota Association of School Administrators (NDASA), as part of the ARAMARK-American Association of School Administrators (AASA) Superintendent of the Year Program.
As the North Dakota Superintendent of the Year, Flowers will be placed in competition with other States' winners for the award of National Superintendent of the Year. In addition, he will be honored along with other finalists at the National Conference on Education in Los Angeles, Cal., Feb. 21-23, 2013. Dr. Flowers was awarded this recognition based on his leadership in a variety of ways which include helping to close a "system-level gap" in his school district, his ability to clearly communicate his district's purpose and future to all constituencies of his community, to improve the quality of teaching and leadership in his district, and his efforts to involve his community stakeholders in addressing the current and future educational needs of the students in the West Fargo School District.
Dr. Flowers received his Associate of Arts degree from Butler Community College, El Dorado, Kan. in 1971, a B.S. in English and Secondary Education in 1973, a M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction in 1976, and a Ph.D. in Administration and Foundations in 1983, all from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kan. His school administration career began in 1979 when he was selected to serve as an associate superintendent in Geary County, Kan. In 1994, he went on to serve as deputy superintendent and interim superintendent for the Ann Arbor School District, Ann Arbor, Mich. In 1999, he became the superintendent for the Fargo School District. In 2007, he became the superintendent for the Hutchinson School District, Hutchinson, Kan. Dr. Flowers held that position until 2010 when he became the superintendent for the West Fargo Public School District and continues to serve this school district in that position.
Dr. Flowers is a member or the North Dakota Association of School Administrators (NDASA) and serves on its board of directors and is a member of the American Association of School Administrators (AASA). In addition, Dr. Flowers is a member of the North Dakota Council of Educational Leaders (NDCEL) and serves on its board of directors representing the SE Region superintendents. He also is on the North Dakota North Central Association/AdvancED State Committee and is a member of the Superintendency Institute of America. Dr. Flowers also serves on the YMCA of Fargo board of directors, the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation board, and is a member of Fargo Rotary Club and had previously served as president Rotary Club in Junction City, Kan. He also served on the Big Brother/Big Sisters board of directors during his tenure as superintendent in Hutchinson, Kan. He received the Arts Education Administrator of the Year (2009) from the Kansas Association of the Arts Educators, the Roughrider Recognition for Service to North Dakota Children award (2007) from the North Dakota Consensus Council and the Outstanding Curriculum Leader in Kansas award (1988) from the Kansas Association of Curriculum and Development.
