The West Fargo Packers’ football season drew to a close four weeks ago, but coaches, parents and fans marked the season’s end on Tuesday with a celebration of the team in the high school commons.

The team ended the year with a 4-5 overall record, but a 4-2 record against Eastern Dakota Conference opponents. On Friday, Nov. 1, the team fell to Bismarck High -- the state runners-up -- by a score of 34-21 in the first round of the playoffs.

The event began with a season recap from commentator Larry Lubben and head coach Jay Gibson, both of whom saw more positives than negatives in the EDC’s fourth-ranked team.

“Whenever you have a group of guys that have very little varsity experience, you are going to struggle early in the season,” head coach Jay Gibson said. “You are going to rely on the senior class to keep thingss together. It usually takes a few games, but it really didn’t take that long for us. We started playing really well in the second game.”

Gibson also expressed his hopefulness for the 2014 season due to his now-experienced junior class, four of whom (linebacker Zach Larson, running back Sam Olsen and lineman Seth Fretheim and Zach Mohs) were named to the All-Eastern Dakota Conference team.

“We have a real exciting junior class, and now they have a lot of experience,” Gibson said. “When you have only 17 seniors, you need juniors to fill in. The first game next year, we will have quite a bit of experience, and that is really exciting.”
