Football team wins third straight
The Packers started from scratch this season with 20 new starters and lost their first two games of the season, yet now they sit atop the Eastern Dakota Conference.
The team won its third consecutive game on Friday, beating the Devils Lake Firebirds 34-20.
The Packers went into halftime trailing 14-7, but their grinding rush attack and 27 points in the second half proved enough for the comeback win.
Senior running back Sam Olsen was handed the ball 22 times in the game, gaining 131 yards and scoring three touchdowns, all of them in the second half.
Junior quarterback Jacob Hoy managed 96 yards on 18 carries and one rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter. He also threw a five-yard touchdown to sophomore tight end Alex Talley for the first Packer touchdown of the game.
Defensively, the Pack came up with three takeaways in the game. Linebacker Zach Larson brought down and interception in the secondquarter, while cornerback Matt Pyle and linebacker Brett James both recovered fumbles.
The Packers are currently the only EDC team with three conference wins, and therefore are ranked first in the conference. They are also the last team to give up 100 points on the season, with only 96 allowed so far.
The 3-2 Packers travel to Bismarck Century on Friday for a 4:30 p.m. game.
