Sheyenne High School got a hopeful glimpse of their athletic program’s future last month.

The Mustangs freshman boys basketball team took home the EDC freshman title on Feb. 15 in a tournament at Davies High School.

After edging Fargo Shanley by just three points in the semifinals, the Mustangs went on to face the Eagles of Fargo Davies, who gave Sheyenne their only two losses of the season. Despite that, the Mustangs went on to beat their rivals 58-36 to win the championship.

“For a new program, it is obviously going to be a promising future with a lot of great young players coming up,” freshman coach Lewis Grant said. “I know it’s early, but that definitely bodes well for the future of Sheyenne basketball having essentially one of the best-looking freshman groups in the state.”

The Mustangs begin competing at the varsity level next season under head coach Tom Kirchoffner.
