Frozen fun with Winter Days
When the West Fargo Park District celebrates Winter Days from January 12 through January 22, they will have plenty of the fluffy white stuff to help them out with their far reaching variety of outdoor activities that will range from the annual snow golf tournament, to sleigh rides, to snowshoe demos and races, to the ever-popular SnoBear rides and the kiddies sled parade, and much, much more. There will also be plenty of indoor fun in the warmth of a variety of facilities.
The Winter Days festivities will officially begin January 12, with the Silver Snowflake Search continuing through January 22. Participants will hunt for five silver snowflakes hidden above ground at public locations to win prizes that include: a $170 value gift card package to Thirteen Avenue restaurants including Texas Roadhouse, Spitfire, Ruby Tuesday and Happy Joe's; a gift package valued at $160 for Eagle Run businesses including Cloud 9 for a design haircut and full body spray tan, GoodFellas pizza certificates, and an Eagle Run Crossing gift card; two $150 Hornbacher's gift cards; and a $100 Petro USA gift card.
Clues and rules will be published in the West Fargo Pioneer and West Fargo News on Jan. 12 and Jan. 19; be posted at the main entrance windows of the West Fargo Park District office; and on the following websites: www.wfparks.org and www.westfargopioneer.com.
New to event this year is the West Fargo Park District Winter Days Photo Contest where participants can show off their photography skills by entering their favorite pictures. Winners will receive a ribbon and a $25 park district gift certificate. Entry forms and rules are available on the park district website. Entries must be returned by Jan. 14 to the park district office or by email to email@example.com
The photo contest winners will be announced on Saturday, Jan. 15 at the Winter Days Party that will be held at Cheney Middle School from 2 to 5 p.m. Other party activities will include interactive kid's music with a DJ, inflatable games, face painting and balloon sculptures; as well as the photo contest winners being named at 2:30 p.m.; a Tae Kwon Do demonstration at 3 p.m.; and a Halftime by Sheri Dance Performance at 3:45 p.m.
Sunday, Jan. 16, will feature a fun-packed afternoon of Frosty Fun in Elmwood Park from 1 to 3 p.m. Hot chocolate and refreshments will be served and all activities will be free. Scenic sleigh rides will be part of the action in South Elmwood, compliments of the Red River Harness Club. Other highlights will be: a Snow Dig for Prizes - dig for treasures in the snow and redeem for prizes; SnoBear Rides in a deluxe motorized fish house that travels up to 24 mph; Winter Archery, learn or improve your archery skills compliments of Camp Fire USA; Kid's Winter Crafts - create a craft to take home at the West Fargo Parks Office; and a Sledding Parade, featuring pre-decorated sleds in the parade in North Elmwood Park at 1:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for the best decorated sled, the person most bundled up, and other crazy categories.
Those attending will also be able to learn the skills of snowshoeing in North Elmwood Park sponsored by Scheels All Sports. Register for the Snowshoe Race by 2 p.m. with the race beginning at 2:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to winners in each age category.
Saturday, January 22, will also be filled with variety of happenings, beginning with the 19th Annual Snow Golf Tournament from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in North Elmwood Park. Fee is $5 per person and those participating must call the park district to reserve a tee time.
The West Fargo VFW will be the site of additional Winter Days fun a little later that day, as West Fargo's Best Chili Cook-off gets underway with check-in time from 3 to 4 p.m. and the judging beginning at 4 p.m. You must be 21 years of age to enter. The top three place winners will receive prizes - $100 for first; $75 for second; and $50 for third place. Door prizes will also be awarded, along with free chili samples after the judging. Entry fee is $7.
Also part of the action at the VFW will be the Frozen T-shirt Contest where four names will be drawn and people will need to use their creativity to melt a frozen T-shirt to win $50. The evening will conclude with "Billy D and the Crystals" playing from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Friday, Jan. 14:
*Free movie and popcorn at 10:30 a.m., for preschoolers and their caretakers.
Tuesday, Jan. 18:
*Storytime for preschoolers: Listen to "Boots," and make a craft from 1:30 to 2 p.m.
*Kitty Giddy Group: Take your knitting or crocheting and join in the fun from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Pre-register by calling 433-5460.
Thursday, Jan. 20:
*Preschool Storytime: Listen to stories, sing songs and make a craft from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., caretaker must remain with child.
*Board Games and Legos: Play games and enjoy refreshments from 7 to 8 p.m. Open to all ages.
Other ongoing Winter Days activities include a Create Your Own Coloring Contest where preschool to third grade students can pick up a coloring contest form from the park office, their school or online at www.wfparks.org and decorate the form and return to the park office by January 20. Winning entries will be displayed at the West Fargo Public Library from Jan. 21-30.
A Winter Days Word Scramble will also be part of the fun. Pick up a copy of this special word find, complete it and return it to the park district office. The Word Scramble will also be printed in today's issue of the West Fargo Pioneer and News. Everyone who completes a puzzle will be eligible to win a prize. One entry is allowed per person. Entries must be returned to the Park office by 4 p.m., Jan. 21.
