Garfield D. Helgeson, 86, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, January 6, 2008 at Emmanuel Nursing Home of Detroit Lakes.
Garfield Duane Helgeson was born to Knute and Alma (Tholen) Helgeson on Aug. 21, 1921 in Mayville, N.D. As a young boy, he moved with his family to the Tholen farm south of Audubon. In the spring of 1924, they moved east of Audubon, and then moved back to the Tholen farm in 1932.
Garfield finished eight grades of school in Lake Center District 78. He graduated from Audubon High School in 1939. He was confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church in 1934. He farmed in the rural Audubon area and worked for Kruger Well Drilling for 25 years. He also worked for Audubon Elevator. Garfield served on the St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery Board. He enjoyed woodworking and loved to read.
Surviving Garfield are his brother, Kenneth Helgeson of Clarissa, Minn.; and six nephews. His parents and sister, Gladys Miller, preceded him in death.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, rural Lake Center with the Rev. Roy Noel officiating; there will be visitation for one hour prior to services at the church.
Honorary casket bearers will be Marlyn Rislund and Duane Grossman. Burial will be in St. Peter's Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Lake Center, Minn.
