Gladys L. Gehrke
Gladys L. Gehrke, 96, of Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo, died Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at MeritCare Hospital's Palliative Care Unit in Fargo.
Gladys Leona Dura was born in Alsen, N.D. on May 5, 1913, to Julius and Rosa (Otto) Dura. She grew up in the Cavalier County area towns of Loma and Alsen and married John R. "Jack" Gehrke on April 30, 1931. They had four children between 1932 and 1943 and lived in N.D., Minn. and Iowa before settling in Harwood, N.D. in 1950. She was an accomplished cake decorator and baker at the North University Piggly Wiggly in Fargo for many years. After her beloved husband passed away in 1965, Gladys moved to Fargo. She was an active member of St. Mary's Cathedral in Fargo.
"Gladee" had many creative talents and enjoyed painting, cooking, crocheting, baking, sewing and, above all, spending time with her family. The memory of her love, faith, thoughtfulness and strength remains alive in the hearts of all who loved her.
Gladys is survived by her daughter-in-law, Judy Gehrke, Fargo; two sisters, Florence Myers, Harwood, and Rose Thompson, North Hollywood, Calif.; twelve grandchildren, Dan Morlan, Crookston, Minn., Judy (Frank) Matejcek, Inkster, N.D., Michelle Gehrke, Sioux City, Iowa, Wanda (Mark) Wilcox, West Fargo, John Gehrke, St. Anthony, N.D., Yvette Gehrke, West Fargo, Rick Groenwold, Norcross, Minn., Joel (Tami) Gehrke, Casselton, N.D., Brad Groenwold, Ada, Mich., Jack (Amy M.) Gehrke, Sammamish, Wash., Renata (Greg) Rogalla, Cohasset, Minn., and Amy R. Gehrke, Fargo, and fifteen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her four children, Rosalie Morlan, John Gehrke, Joyce Groenwold and Ernest Gehrke; sons-in-law, Robert Morlan and Harlan Groenwold; daughter-in-law, Janice Gehrke; her parents and her siblings, Clara, Arthur, William, Emma, Millie, Lena and Leo.
Visitation and prayer services were held on Friday, March 5, 2010 at West Funeral Home, West Fargo.
A funeral mass was held Saturday, March 6, 2010 at West Funeral Home. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery~North, Fargo.
