The boys golf team took fourth place at EDC last week, qualifying for this weekend's state meet in Hankinson, where the team hopes to put an exclamation point on one of its most successful seasons in recent years.

West Fargo was just warming up on April 16, when the team took second at the Detroit Lakes Invite. In a four-day span in mid-May the Packers finished second in three invites and won the Wahpeton Invite. Spring flooding resulted in the slew of competitions that week due to makeups.

The season has seen the emergence of several Packer golfers, including sophomore Logan Palmer, juniors Jared Cowden and Ryan Olien, Connor Holland and Luke Olson. All have had their shining moments this season and have complemented junior John Sand, who golfed at state last season and was one of the more experienced golfers coming into this season.

It was Palmer who emerged as the team's top golfer this season - and one of the region's best. His 77.4 average ties him for sixth in the EDC and lands him a spot on the all-conference team. Palmer led the Packers with a 79 at the EDC meet last week, landing him in seventh place.

West Fargo returns to state after missing the cut at EDC last season.

Baseball misses state

The Packer baseball team failed to qualify for the state tournament for the second season in a row. West Fargo lost a state qualifying game to Fargo North by the score of 3-2. The loss came after a 2-0 semi-final loss to Fargo Shanley.

West Fargo had the second-best overall record for an EDC team this year at 18-7 and finished fifth in the regular season conference standings at 10-6.

Soccer team misses out

The West Fargo girls soccer team missed the cut to make the state tournament for the third consecutive season. The Packers lost 2-0 shutouts against both Fargo North and Fargo South to end their season.

The losses landed the Packers (4-6-2 overall) in fifth place in the EDC for the regular season; the top four teams make the state tourney.

Packer of the Week

For the first time since the highly-coveted and always sought after Packer of the Week Award was instituted in 2006 by this publication, it's going to a coach. That's right - the Packer of the week is Pat Johnson, for coaching his Packers to every single state softball title since 1998.
