High school celebrating DECA week
The West Fargo High School is observing National DECA week Oct. 12-18 with a full slate of activities. Today (Thursday, Oct. 16) features DECA Trivia; and Friday, Oct. 17, everyone will be able to show their support and raise money for Muscular Dystrophy with the help of a Dunk Tank. Students can participate in dunking principals and teachers in front of the High School from 11:19 a.m. to 12:43 p.m. Principal Gary Clark and Assistant Principal Cory Steiner, and four other teachers will be up for dunking by students who pay a dollar per ball to do so.
Saturday, Oct. 18, will be the fourth annual Applebee's Breakfast, open to the public. Tickets are available from any DECA member in North Dakota or by contacting the state office at 701-328-3182. Tickets are also available at the door for a donation of $3.
DECA is a student organization whose program of leadership and personal development is designed for high school students enrolled in marketing education, enabling students to take what they learn in class to real world situations. Any students who are enrolled in a Marketing Education class can be involved in DECA. Students elect their own officers and help lead their chapter along with their advisor Jenna Skaff, the marketing teacher at WFHS. Chapter activities support the school and the community through teamwork of the chapter.
DECA members from across the state will have the chance to compete at their State conference in March, using their classroom knowledge and compete in more than 35 events. Students use their skills learned in marketing firsthand at school with their school store, The Packer Connection. Visitors can check out the Packer apparel and school spirit items in the store from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. daily.
Chapter officers, along with other members, will travel to their Annual Fall Leadership Conference in Bismarck Oct. 19-20. This year's theme is 'Make Your Mark.' Participants will enjoy a social activity at the NBA game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Denver Nuggets. The opening session on Sunday evening will feature the 2008-2009 state officers, the Central Region Vice President Isaac Robinson III, and keynote presenter and trainer Amy Gallimore. Workshops will be conducted on Monday by Amy Gallimore, Isaac Robinson III, Stephanie Sandstrom, and Nicole Mathern. The president's luncheon is sponsored by The Marcil Group. Qwest and CHS Foundation are sponsors of the conference.
