Hockey wins one, loses two in Fergus Falls

The Packers had a mixed bag of a weekend tournament in Fergus Falls, Minn. They beat Park Rapids 6-1 on Thursday before losing 5-3 to Monticello, Minn., on Friday and 5-2 against Fergus Falls on Saturday.

In Thursday's game, the Packers were led by freshman defenseman Grant Ellenson and junior forward Jake Wasem, both of whom had a goal and an assist, and junior forward Tyler Berginski, who had three assists.

Other goals came from forwards Lucas Miller, Blake Nelson, Derrick LaCoe and Brett Lessard. Sophomore defenseman Jake Hoy added two assists.

Junior goalie Bailey Vareberg had 14 saves in 15 shots on goal and an assist.

In Friday's game, Hoy had an assist on all three Packer goals, but Monticello goalie Darien Jones stopped 28 shots to secure a victory.

The goals came from Miller in the second period, as well as junior forward C.J. Lenzmeier (on the power play) and senior forward Tyler Crouse in the third.

In Saturday's game against Fergus Falls, it was Vareberg that had 28 saves, but it was not enough to pick up the win.

The Packers two goals came from Berginski in the second period and Nelson in the third, with LaCoe getting an assist on both goals.

The Packers close out 2012 with a 4-7-0 record. They are currently ranked fifth in the East Region with six points.

The Packers travel to Devils Lake on Saturday to take on the Firebirds at 2:15 p.m.
