Items still needed for United Way School Supply Drive
The 12th Annual United Way of Cass-Clay School Supply Drive kicked off July 15, and is in full force, but more backpacks and supplies still are needed.
As of Thursday morning, more then 1,000 backpacks have been packed with full sets of school supplies. That means the drive currently is thousands of backpacks short of its 2010 goal before distributing them Aug. 14 and 19.
This year's goal of 4,500 backpacks is a 13 percent increase from 2009. Last year, the United way of Cass-Clay distributed more than 4,100 backpacks with sets of school supplies.
Volunteers began organizing supplies and packing backpacks on Monday, Aug. 2. Since then, more than 100 volunteers have helped to organize supplies and pack backpacks each day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the FargoDome.
Currently, the top needs are folders, colored pencils, scissors and backpacks, specifically those for young girls in kindergarten through third grade. That age range historically has run out.
However, it still is early in the drive, so all supplies still are needed. Besides the aforementioned items, this includes: markers, crayons, loose-leaf paper, erasers, pens, 1-inch binders, notebooks, pencils, pencil boxes or pouches and highlighters.
One of the best ways to donate to the school supply drive is financially. While donating supplies is important, donors can make the biggest impact by giving monetarily. Because the United Way of Cass-Clay works with donors and vendors, the organization is able to purchase backpacks and supplies in bulk, which stretches the dollars further.
Monetary donations of cash or check can be mailed to: United Way of Cass-Clay, PO Box 1609, Fargo, ND 58107-1609. Walk-in visits also are welcome at their Fargo location at 219 7th Street South.
