For many years, a group of dedicated volunteers have organized and hosted a ladies activity for the show and this year will be no exception with the Ladies Brunch and Style Show set for Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the Great Hall at the Fargo Holiday Inn, 3803 13th Ave. S.
More than just a brunch, the event will features great food, live entertainment, a style show and fantastic door prizes with Sandy Buttweiler of KFGO serving as emcee.
The original intent behind the ladies day activities and the start of this particular event was to bring farmers to the show and keep the wives busy so the men could shop the farm equipment. Many of the ladies that help organize these activities are either on the board of directors of the Red River Valley Fair Association or their spouses are on the board of directors.
Passionate about agriculture, these ladies meet on a regular basis putting their hearts and souls into making the Ladies Brunch and Style show the best it can possibly be. And there is no doubt whatsoever that they have succeeded, with the event growing over the years and becoming one the ladies look forward to. So much so, many have attended every year, viewing it as a "reunion" of sorts and a reason to get together.
Members of the committee are: Mary Morken and Ilene McClean, co-chairs; Arlene Bakke, Lila Hutchinson, Julie Levos, Judi Lundstrom, Mary McIntyre, Ardell Strand, Lois Sullivan, Jerri Wolfer, Esther Anderson, and JoAnne Anderson.
Doors to the event will open at 9 a.m. with the brunch starting at 10 a.m. The Big Iron Farm Show "Fun Bus" will be available beginning at 8 a.m. to transport attendees between the fairgrounds and the Holiday Inn Fargo during Ladies Day. The bus, which will be located at the Grandstand/KFGO Studio on the fairgrounds, will also shuttle passengers between the Big Iron Farm Show and the West Acres Shopping Center each day.
Entertainment during the brunch will feature Shannon Lee Gunderson, a former Las Vegas entertainer who will provide a musical and vocal performance.
Models from local clothing stores, Catherine's, The Dress Barn and Coldwater Creek, will showcase the latest fashions during a style show. Another popular aspect of the event is the door prizes which are given away, ranging from gift certificates from the West Acres Shopping Center as well as several other businesses.
The Ladies Day brunch has been part of the Big Iron Farm Show nearly every year, according to McLean of Wheatland. "We have always had a pretty good crowd. A lot of women come with their husbands (to the Big Iron Farm Show) and this is an activity for them, although there are a lot of people that aren't farm-related that come, too."
In the past years, 450 to 500 women have been part of the Women's Day brunch.
Tickets cost $20 and are available at the door. Seating for the event is limited.
