Llewellyn "Lew" Cuffe

Llewellyn "Lew" Cuffe of West Fargo passed away on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at MeritCare Palliative Care, Fargo, N.D. at the age of 78.

Lew was born August 22, 1931 in the small town of Olga, N.D. (Cavalier County). He was one of ten children (five boys and five girls).

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and four sisters.

He is survived by his loving wife of eight years, Joan; one sister, Carrie (Marce) Charboneau of Calif.; four children, Sidney Cuffe of Fargo, Mike (Angie) Cuffe of Jamestown, N.D., Janet (Tim) Houser of West Fargo, Jill (Cal) Willits of Prosper, N.D.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Lew worked at various construction jobs until 1951, when he joined the Air Force. He served twenty plus years of active duty until he retired in 1971. He served in Korea (1952-1953), Santa Rosa Island off the California coast during the Cuban missile crisis, Vietnam (1968-1969). Among his ribbons and medals is the Air Force Commendation medal for meritorious service, in which he was proud of. In 1972 Lew leased a service station in West Fargo (Cuffe's Champlin), in which he was in that business for eight years. In 1980 he became a property manager with his son-in-law, Tim Houser; he retired in 2001 after twenty years in the business. Lew loved to hunt, fish and party, in which he did quite well in all categories.

A prayer service was held on Friday, October 2, 2009 at 7 p.m., with visitation from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the West Funeral Home, West Fargo.

A memorial service was held Saturday, October 3, 2009 at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, West Fargo. Burial was at the N.D. Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, N.D.
