Local baseball teams end season strong
The West Fargo White 9-year-old travel team won the State 9-year-old Cal Ripken Baseball Tournament, which took place in Minot from July 13-16.
The team won five of their six games, three of those wins coming by at least four runs, and beat Bismarck twice in the championship games in the double-elimination tournament.
In the first championship game against Bismarck, the team was down 5-2 in the last inning, but went on a six-run rally to win 8-6 and force an extra game.
In that extra game, the score was tied 2-2 in the fifth inning when West Fargo rallied again, this time for five runs, to win 7-2 and take home the state championship.
The team will now represent North Dakota at the Cal Ripken Midwest Plains Regional Baseball Tournament in Bismarck this weekend.
The West Fargo 13-year-old traveling baseball team won the Eastern North Dakota Division on July 14, beating Fargo 4-3 at the EDC tournament held at Jack Williams Stadium in Fargo.
With this victory, the team advanced to the state tournament, which took place from Thursday to Saturday at Newman Outdoor Field.
The team won their first game against Williston Thursday night, but lost the next two to Grand Forks and Dickinson on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
The team did not go home empty-handed, however, as a few players won some individual awards.
Catcher Jake Johnson was awarded the MVP in the first game. Jake went 5 for 5 with 3 runs and 2 RBI's.
Johnson, third baseman Hayden Reynolds and shortstop Tanner Petersen were awarded the WOW award, which is given by the opposing team to the player(s) who made a great play or played above expectations, during the same game.
Left fielder Keaton Mahnke placed 3rd in the Home Run Derby that was held on Friday.
