Lorraine Peterson

March 19, 1924-March 14, 2009

Lorraine Peterson, 84, of Pelican Rapids, died on Saturday, March 14, 2009, at MeritCare Palliative Care Unit in Fargo.

Eunice Lorraine Hoadley was born the daughter of Floyd and Myrtle (Randall) Hoadley on March 19, 1924, in Pelican Rapids. She was baptized at Scambler Church in rural Pelican Rapids and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls.

Lorraine attended Bangor School through the 8th grade and Pelican Rapids High School through 11th grade. In her youth, Lorraine was active in 4-H. On March 19, 1949, Lorraine married Melvin Wilford Peterson at her parents' home in Scambler Township.

Lorraine worked in Fergus Falls as a dishwasher at Claude Moody and the Lincoln Café, where she also was a night cook. She worked at St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes as a dishwasher and making baby formula. Later she worked at the B & L Café in Pelican Rapids as a dishwasher.

Lorraine enjoyed baking, especially rice pudding, graham cracker-vanilla pudding dessert, fruit cake, sandbakkles, cut molasses cookies, glorified rice and scotcharoos. She loved country western music and old-time polka party music; she enjoyed dancing the waltz and two-step. She spent her quiet time doing word searches, puzzles, latch hook and embroidery. She babysat for her grandchildren and many other children, liked to shop, loved to eat out, and canned produce from Dad's garden. According to her family she made the best potato salad around. She socialized with neighbors and friends over coffee and cookies.

Lorraine will be remembered for her thoughtfulness and helping hand; she always remembered others, especially at holidays. But most of all she took pleasure in her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lorraine was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church, where she was involved in ladies aide, quilting ("the coffee lady"), circle morning group, and vacation bible school as the kitchen helper, with Koolaid and goodies for the staff and children.

Surviving Lorraine are her children: Sharon (Ed) Fjestad of Pelican Rapids, Karla (Larry) Netland of Bagley and Linda (Bruce) Riebe of Frazee; stepson, Gary (Peggy) Jonson; brother, Ralph (Kit) Hoadley; grandchildren; great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Floyd and Myrtle; husband, Melvin; and sister, Joyce.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 20 at Faith Lutheran Church in Pelican Rapids, with the Rev. Roger Rotvold officiating. Burial was in Scambler Cemetery, Pelican Rapids.

Larson Funeral Home of Pelican Rapids was entrusted with arrangements. An online guestbook is available at
