Former Wolf Lake resident Mary S. Karppinen, 90, of Frazee, died on Monday, April 27, 2009 at the Frazee Care Center.
Mary Sophia Aho was born to Henry and Sophia (Haapaniemi) Aho on March 20, 1919 in Wolf Lake. She was raised on a farm near Wolf Lake, where she attended country school. She married Henry Karppinen on Sept. 13, 1941 in Detroit Lakes. They farmed in the Toad Lake area until they retired. Mary moved into the Frazee Care Center in the fall of 2004.
Surviving Mary are her children, Milton Karppinen of Frazee, Elaine (Bruce) Wothe of Atwater, Minn., and Mahlon (Cathie) Karppinen of Glyndon, Minn.; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Mary in death were her husband, Henry Karppinen; parents, Henry and Sophia Aho; brothers, Charles, Hans, Jack, Matt, twins Waino and Walter, and Eino; and sisters, Aune and Aili.
Visitation is scheduled from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, April 30 at Furey Funeral Home in Frazee, with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service; and will continue for one hour prior to the start of services Friday at the church.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, May 1 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Frazee, with the Rev. William Aufdenkamp officiating. Burial will be in the Wolf Lake Cemetery.
