Mattson Golf Scramble set for Friday
The 11th annual Brian Mattson Invitational Golf Scramble Fundraiser will be taking place on Friday at the Leonard Country Club in Leonard, N.D.
"(This event) all began as friends getting together to play a little golf together," said Brian Mattson, the event's organizer. "The next year, more friends showed up, and it eventually grew to the point where we decided we might as well raise money for West Fargo. This is something for our community to enjoy."
This year's fundraiser will be held in honor of Bill Lopez, who passed away at the age of 57 on May 2 after a 14-month battle with bladder cancer.
Lopez played an active role in local sports, serving on both the American Gold Gymnastics Board and the Red River Valley Officials Association. He also officiated basketball around the area and coached various local baseball teams.
"I personally knew Bill as a referee back when I played basketball," Mattson said. "It was an easy pick for everyone to have the event for him."
Mattson expects 60 to 80 people to participate on Friday, but everyone hoping to play is welcome.
Prizes, including cash and trophies, will go to the winning team. The course's eighth hole, a 140-yard par 3, will feature $10,000 hole-in-one contest. Anyone who makes a hole-in-one on that hole will walk away with the cash.
Area businesses can sponsor holes for $25, with the exception of the eighth hole which will cost $190. Company logos will be displayed next to the hole, along with any other information provided.
Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m., with tee off set for 12:30 p.m. The cost per person is $75, which will cover 18 holes of golf, a cart rental, a meal and two drink tickets. Questions can be directed to Mattson at 701.306.4825.
