Mavis A. Kukes, 83, formerly West Fargo, died Friday, December 25, 2009 in Rosewood On Broadway, Fargo.
Mavis Arlene Hovde was born June 5, 1926 at Fingal, N.D. She grew up and attended schools at Oriska, N.D. and Nome, N.D. She married Arvid Sanderson in 1945. They lived in Lisbon, N.D., where she managed the VFW Club. She married William Kukes October 19, 1958 in Williston, N.D. They lived in Sidney, Mont. a short time before moving to Moorhead, Minn., where they lived until moving to West Fargo in 1968. Through the years, Mavis worked in area restaurants before owning and operating the Villa Retirement Home in Hawley, Minn. For several years, Mavis was employed at the West Fargo VFW Club, where she was very active in the Women's Auxiliary and was a past president. She had also served as a volunteer at the Veterans Hospital in Fargo.
She is survived by eight children, Karen Sanderson, Billings, Mont., Terry Sanderson, Lewistown, Mont., Kent Sanderson, Mandan, N.D., Beth Brewer, Vicky (Cliff) Rott, Billy (Karen) Kukes, all of West Fargo, Jana (Scott) Askelson, Moorhead, and Shawn (Jeanine) Kukes, West Fargo. Also surviving are a brother, Gene (Marla) Hovde, St. Paul, Minn.; two sisters, Lois Brendmoen and Joan Trelstad, both Valley City, N.D. as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William in 1999; parents, Germund and Clara Hovde and a son, David Sanderson.
Visitation will be held Weds., Dec. 30, 2009 from 5 to 7 p.m. in West Funeral Chapel, West Fargo, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
A memorial service will be held Thurs., Dec. 31, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. in West Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Fargo.
