Melheim to join Faith Lutheran Monday
Faith Lutheran Church is giving the community a reason to celebrate on Monday.
Dr. Rich Melheim will be at the church promoting his book "Holding Your Family Together: 5 Simple Steps to Help Bring Your Family Closer to God and Each Other."
As one of the stops on his 50-city book tour, Melheim will advise parents and church leaders on his five-step "FAITH5" program, focusing on strengthening ties between families and God.
"This generation is the most connected generation ever thanks to the internet and smartphones, but is it a real connection?" Faith Formation Director Amy Kippen said. "FAITH5 provides families opportunities for true, eyeball-to-eyeball connection."
The five steps of FAITH5 are:
-- Share: Parents and children are encouraged to share their highs and lows of each day with each other.
-- Read: Families should read a Bible verse every day.
-- Talk: The daily Bible verse is to be discussed and applied to the highs and lows of the day.
-- Pray: Families are encouraged to pray together.
-- Bless: Parents are asked to bless their children each night, and vice versa.
"When kids go to bed every night blessed, how can that not change who they become?" Kippen said. "This is a simple ritual that sets a system in place thats non-threatening and allows parents to talk to their children in more depth."
Faith Lutheran's curriculum has been based around FAITH5 for several years.
"It's part of everything we do," Kippen said. "The whole idea behind Rich's message is empowering parents, and it is great stuff to use in the church."
The public event, which will provide practical parenting advice with a humorous twist, will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, and is free of charge to attend. Everyone is encouraged to bring a pillow for a post-event pillow fight that is aimed to teach "the neurology, psychology, sociology and theology of combining exercise and fun with FAITH5 for maximum results."
"If families come to this, they are going to have a blast. It will be entertaining, for sure, but will also equip parents with simple tools to do their best for their kids. If you attend, you will not be sorry. It will definitely be worth your time."
Faith Lutheran Church is located at 127 2nd Ave. E, and has worship services on Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
