Merlin M. Herzog Sr., 86, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Valley Memorial Homes in Woodside Village, Grand Forks, N.D.
Merlin was born to William and Bertha (Johnson) Herzog on July 7, 1922 in Melbourne, Iowa. He graduated from Detroit Lakes High School on May 29, 1941. In August 1942 he joined the United States Navy and served in both the Mediterranean and Pacific theaters. He was part of the 293rd Joint Assault Signal Corps, 2nd Beach Battalion, attaining the rank of signalman first class. He was discharged on Dec. 24, 1945.
Merlin married Fern Dickinson on June 7, 1947 in Mahnomen County. They lived in Detroit Lakes and Merlin worked as a municipal employee for 30 years. He retired in 1980. In 2007 they moved to Bethany Homes in Fargo.
Merlin was active in the Jess-Omundson VFW Post 1676 in Detroit Lakes, assisting fellow veterans in numerous ways including participation in the honor guard for hundreds of funerals. He served as post commander and was a member of the Cooties. His greatest joy was time spent with family.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Fern; children, Larry (Yvonne) Herzog of Grand Forks, Douglas (Marilyn) Herzog of Fargo, Merlin (Judy) Herzog, Jr. of Lake Havasu, Ariz., Karen (Dennis) Heit of Fargo, Bruce (Joanne) Herzog of Reno, Nev., Lorrie (Stan) Wise of Spring Lake Park, Minn., and Vicki Englund of Big Fork, Mont.; 22 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and siblings Harold "Bud" Herzog of Renton, Wash., Norma Johnson of Chula Vista, Calif., and Mavis (Bill) Sharp of Mesa, Ariz.
Preceding Merlin in death were his parents, William and Bertha; and siblings, Will, Loren, Phyllis and Margaret Herzog.
Visitation will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 5 at Boulger Funeral Home in Fargo, continuing for one hour prior to services at Bethany Homes on Monday.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, April 6 at Bethany Homes-Mavis Whiting Chapel in Fargo. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Boulger Funeral Home in Fargo.
