Military News: Born named officer of the year

Air Force Capt. Matthew A. Born has been named Air Mobility Command Colonel Derrel L. Dempsey Airfield Operations Officer of the Year.

Selection was based on the individual's exemplary duty performance, job knowledge, leadership qualities, teamwork, significant self-improvement, personal achievements, notable accomplishments, and community service and support.

The captain is currently deployed with the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing at an undisclosed location in Southwest Asia in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Born, an airfield operations commander, is normally assigned to the 436th Operations Squadron at Dover Air Force Base, Del. He has served in the military for five years.

He is the son of Russell and Jenifer Born of Red Lodge, Mont., and grandson of George Nelson of, Roseville, Minn.

His wife, Katherine, is the daughter of John and Kathy Reichert of Harwood, N.D.

The captain graduated in 2000 from Red Lodge High School, and earned a bachelor's degree in 2004 from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks.
