Several members of the North Dakota Army and Air National Guard were recently recognized for achievements this past year during the Professional Development Workshop in Fargo.

Officers of the Year were selected by North Dakota's National Guard Association of the United States chapter, a professional organization that many North Dakota National Guard members choose to join. Among all the honorees, James R. Olson, West Fargo, was named Field-Grade Officer of the Year. Olson currently is deployed to Kosovo, and later this year will return to his full-time National Guard job as the operations and training officer for the 141st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade.

Airmen of the Year, who were named during last weekend's banquet in Moorhead, were recognized again. The Senior Noncommmissioned Officer of the Year, Master Sgt. Shane J. Amundson, lives in West Fargo and serves with the 119th Logistics Readiness Squadron.

All of the Guardsmen honored during the evening were presented a plaque and flag set from the North Dakota American Legion for their accomplishments.

Spc. Bradley J. Mattson of the N.D. Army National Guard completed Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, S.C., on Dec. 11, 2009. He joined the Guard using the Officer Candidate School (OCS) Enlistment Option, and will attend OCS in Fort Meade, S.D. this summer 2010. After completion of training he will become a Commissioned Officer in the N.D. Army National Guard, bearing the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

In civilian life Mattson has plans to advance his military career pursuing a full-time National Guard job. He is a 2006 graduate of Mayville State University and a graduate of West Fargo High School class of 1999. He is married to Lindsay Mattson, also a member of the N.D. Army National Guard in the 188th Air Defense Artillery Battery. They have a child Kylen, 10 months.

Bradley's father is Mike Mattson of West Fargo.

Nicholas Kane, West Fargo, has been promoted to the rank of staff sergeant in the North Dakota Army National Guard. He was promoted by 1st Lt. Anthony A. Bryant.

Kane currently is deployed to Kosovo with Multi-National Battle Group-East on a NATO peacekeeping mission. This battle group is comprised of nearly 2,200 soldiers, including Task Force Hellas and Task Force POL/UKR and Turkey. The Charter mission of MNBG-E is maintaining a safe and secure environment, and providing freedom of movement for the people of Kosovo.

During the deployment, Kane serves as a team leader in 2nd Platoon, Alpha Company, 231st Maneuver Task Force.

Kane has been a member of the N.D. National Guard for 12 years. In civilian life, Kane works at ECOLAB as a Service Specialist.

He is the husband of Kristin (Pfeifle) Kane, West Fargo, and the son of Donald and Daphne Kane, Fargo.
