Mustangs win EDC ‘C’ tourney

The Sheyenne Mustangs volleyball “C” team may have given its fans a glimspe into the future of the program.

The team earned the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Dakota Conference “C” tournament, then cruised through the competition to earn the conference title on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Shanley High School.

“I am really proud of the girls and the effort they put in this entire season,” head coach Leah Newton said. “As a team we set goals for the season and worked really hard to achieve them. Winning the tournament was one of our goals and it was just a great way to finish the season.”

Being the No. 2 seed, the Mustangs earned a first-round bye in the tournament.

They met the West Fargo Packers in a cross-town match in the quarterfinals and decisively beat them 2-0 (25-11, 25-20).

The Mustangs followed that up with a 2-0 (25-10, 25-13) victory over Devils Lake in the semifinals to advance to the championship game.

In that game, the Mustangs met the hosting Fargo Davies Eagles, and topped them in two games (25-23,25-18).

The Mustangs varsity volleyball program will begin in the fall of 2014.
