Dancers from West Fargo's middle schools went to Florida to dance against the country's best dancers and came home with a National Championship.

The West Fargo Mystikix dance team took first place in the junior high kick category at the Universal Dance Association’s (UDA) National Dance Team Championship in Florida on Sunday, Feb. 2.

The Mystikix team is made up of seventh- and eighth-graders from Cheney and Liberty Middle Schools. This is the first time the Mystikix attended the UDA National Championship, which was held at Disney Word.

"Describing the moment we heard our name called is hard to put into words," said Mystikix coaches Sasha Steichen and Ashley Gerdes. "We've worked so hard the past nine months, so it was the most rewarding, exciting, happy, nerve-racking moment, and no one can prepare for it. These girls well deserve this national championship as we've never seen such a hard-working, motivated and determined group of girls at such a young age."

The dancers qualified for the national competition at a regional UDA camp during the summer, and have been practicing three to four days a week at Cheney since the beginning of the summer.

The Mystikix also took fifth place in the POM category.

Approximately twenty junior high teams from all around the nation participated in both events.
