News from the Nest: Hockey night out involves busy crew

Email

This past weekend my husband and I took our kids to watch the West Fargo boy's hockey game. My sister-in-law and her family met us at the arena. Our group consisted of my husband and I, our 6 year-old son and 3 year-old daughter, my sister-in-law, her husband and their two young boys, ages 2 and not quite 1 year-old. A busy crew to say the least!

Thankfully we found spots next to a couple who seemed happy to have the extra entertainment consisting of our 4 small kids. Every so often a kid would grab one of their shoulders or knees for extra support as they climbed up and down and up and down the rows of bleachers.

Our son is a termite in hockey so he loves to watch the game and see the big guys out on the ice. On several occasions he would yell comments like "go get 'em!" or "yeah, woo hoo!" and the lady would chuckle at his enthusiasm. She then asked him if he was going to play hockey some day and he proudly answered with a hint of arrogance "I already do."

My daughter enjoyed the evening as well. She had hot chocolate for the first time and made it very clear it was her favorite part of the game. I should clarify that by the time she drank any it was actually luke-warm chocolate. Her patience was tested as we watched the steam roll off the drink. After 20 minutes of her asking nonstop if it was finally cooled off, I added water to it so she could enjoy her treat. Less than 30 seconds later the half cup I gave her was gone. All that was left was a great big smile surrounded by a chocolate circle.

I think our two little nephews enjoyed the evening with their cousins. They were passed around quite a bit in what I like to call the parents' game of "musical children." We've all been there, right? One parent holds a child until the kid has worn out their welcome, then passes that child onto another adult who has had it "easy" watching a different child. And so the game continues. I think out of all four adults involved my husband enjoyed musical children the most. Our son stood by him so I guess that is the child he was "watching." Even though at 6 years of age our son is completely self-sufficient. The two of them sat behind us and watched the hockey game as the rest of us passed the baby around the circle and made sure the two toddlers didn't fall off the bleachers.

After two periods of musical children my sister-in-law and her husband decided to head home. We stayed and finished the game but unfortunately the Packers didn't win that night. Our son was bummed but still happy he got to watch the big kids. Our daughter, however, was delighted as she had been rooting for the purple team all along. Sorry Packers, don't take offense. She is a 3 year-old girl after all...
