North Dakota Center for Distance Education appoints new director
Dr. Alan J. Peterson, West Fargo, was hired as Director of the North Dakota Center for Distance Education (ND CDE) in July. ND CDE, located in Fargo, is an accredited school providing quality distance education for students in grades 6-12. Peterson, a native of Havana, N.D., received college degrees from North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS), Valley City State University (VCSU), Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM), and the University of Minnesota.
Before coming to ND CDE, Peterson worked in both business and public education. For the past fifteen years he served as the president of a multi-national, education, service provider and as a management consultant to several U.S. and international companies. He began his education career in Hayfield, Minn., as a high school English teacher and coach, and later continued those roles in Jamestown, N.D. Peterson then returned to one of his alma maters, NDSCS, to teach college composition, literature and technical writing courses and coach basketball. During his tenure at NDSCS he was awarded a Bush Foundation Leadership Fellowship. Peterson used his fellowship to attend the University of Minnesota where he earned a Doctor of Education Degree. One unique aspect of his doctoral program was two internships with the Minnesota System of Colleges and Universities (MnSCU). The internships included experiences with Tech Prep and dual enrollment programs, as well as, state-supported assistance provided to organizations seeking management system accreditation and certification. The internship focused on management system certification led to his working with a community college consortium comprised of representatives from twelve states and one Canadian province. Together the group developed educational materials and teacher development activities for both classroom and online delivery to assist small and medium-sized businesses meet globally-mandated management system performance requirements.
Peterson is a former member of the North Dakota House of Representatives, serving District 25 during the 1991-92 biennium.
