West Fargo High School runs a laboratory preschool called, Packerland Preschool. The preschool is located at the high school and is run by students enrolled in Child Care Services with a Family and Consumer Science teacher supervising. The students are all juniors and seniors who have successfully completed a course in child development and are currently enrolled in the Child Care Services class under the direction of Kathryn Stangeland.
Before qualifying to work in the preschool, the students spend their traditional classroom time learning about setting up and operating a safe and appropriate environment, guiding preschoolers, maintaining professionalism, and planning and implementing age-appropriate curriculum. The preschool day is structured, changing activities roughly every 15 minutes, with lessons planned in advance to educate the whole child, using a hands-on approach. Each day there is also time set aside for each child to engage in activities of his or her own choice. Children must be at least three years old and be toilet trained to attend Packerland Preschool.
Four sessions are operated throughout the school year. Each session lasts approximately four weeks, running Tuesdays through Fridays, from 8:45 to 10:20 a.m. The next session will run from April 29 to May 23.
