Packers end season with two wins

The West Fargo soccer team ended the regular season on a high note, beating the Moorhead Spuds 2-0 on Tuesday evening before beating the EDC-rival Fargo South Bruins 3-1 on Saturday.

They end the season winning three straight matches and nine of the past ten.

In Tuesday's match against the Spuds, the Packers were locked in a scoreless draw until almost 20 minutes into the second half, when midfielder Zuheer Al Abase shook three defenders and scored an unassisted goal.

With just over three minutes left in the match, senior Lucas Miller scored off a cross from junior Abdi Gedi to lock up the victory.

Junior keeper Nathan Sample stopped all six shot he faced.

The Packers' match against Fargo South was originally set for Thursday night, but was postponed till Saturday due to inclement weather.

Despite the rescheduling, the Packers came out strong and overcame the Bruins.

The Packers got two goals from senior Brady Rotert in the first half, with an assist coming from Miller on the first goal.

Shortly after halftime, Miller scored one of his own, with an assist coming from midfielder Kory Wolden.

Sample had nine saves on ten shots.

The Packers finished the season with an overall record of 13-3-2 on the season and 9-2-1 (19 points) in the Eastern Dakota Conference, which earns them second place in the conference.

Soccer playoffs begin tomorrow afternoon, and the Packers will start of by facing the Minot High Magicians at 7 p.m. at Fargo Shanley High School. They will also have a match on Friday and possibly on Saturday, with times to be determined.
