Packers football advances to semifinals
The West Fargo football team successfully took down the No. 4 ranked West Region team last Saturday to advance to this Saturday's state semifinal game.
The Packers (8-1) were led by senior quarterback Matt Ruff, who passed for 202 yards and one touchdown en route to a 24-15 win over Mandan.
West Fargo is set to face Bismarck (8-2) at 2 p.m. Saturday, on Packer Field. Though they will have home advantage for the second consecutive week, the Packers still have to be on their toes against a perennial powerhouse like the Demons.
West Fargo picked up its first win of the season against No. 2 Bismarck, a close 6-0 contest Aug. 27, that was a testament to both teams' defensive lines.
If the Packers win, they will advance to the title match for the first time in seven years. West Fargo's last title games also culminated in back-to-back championships (2002-03).
The other team in the state championship will either be the East's No. 2 Fargo South (9-1) or the West's No. 1 Bismarck Century (8-2). The Bruins' only loss of the season came from the Packers, but West Fargo's only loss of the season came from the Patriots.
Century faced off against South in the two teams' season openers. The result: a Bruins' 26-21 win.
