Packers take first at Unruh Memorial

The Packers wrestling team began its season last Tuesday and, so far, have shown nothing to suggest that this season will be any different from last year.

The team hosted the Valley City Hi-Liners on Tuesday, beating them 64-10.

They then traveled to Wahpeton on Friday to participate in the Dan Unruh Memorial Tournament, where they took first place as a team, scoring 290.5 points, 64.5 points higher than last year's first-place total.

Against Valley City, seven Packers pinned their opponents, including 106-pounder Keegan Cronin and 195-pounder Preston Lehmann, who did so in under a minute.

In the Unruh Tournament, 15 Packers finished in the top five in their respective weight classes, including seven first-place finishes and four second-place finishes.

The wrestlers that finished first include:

• Jordan Shearer (126 pounds) who pinned Justice Lamer of Brookings in 1 minute 2 seconds.

• Trevor Kringlie (132 pounds) won by forfeit over fellow Packer Jesse Sheaer for first place.

• Kollin Kragnes (138 pounds) who won by a 6-2 decision over fellow Packer Christian Ramberg

• Weston Dobler (145 pounds) who won by a 16-7 major decision over Nick Hanson of Brookings.

• Anjelo Shepherd (160 pounds) beat Lisbon's Wyatt Aberle by a 7-1 decision.

• Miles Scholl (182 pounds) beat Kody Vandenykle of Frazee by a 10-2 major decision.

• Preston Lehmann (195 pounds) pinned Crookston's Josh Edlund in 48 seconds and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

"This is a great start to the season," Packer head coach Kayle Dangerurd said. "I think the guys wrestled hard. We know we have a lot of work to do and we aim to get better each time we compete."

The Packers will be at Grand Forks Central on Friday and Saturday for a weekend tournament.
